Biola basketball began the 2022-23 campaign on Friday and looked to be in midseason form with a 35-point rout of CSULA.

LOS ANGELES --- The season opener for the BU men's basketball squad resulted in much success for the Eagles. Biola hit the road and defeated Cal State LA on Friday by a wide margin of 83-48.

The contest was never in doubt for BU, as the team led the Golden Eagles for 37 minutes.

A 10-0 run near the end of the first half, gave the Eagles plenty of breathing room. A three-pointer from Alex Wright sparked the rally and a three ball from Daniel Esparza put the exclamation point on it.

A 14-point halftime lead did not provoke complacency from Biola. The BU squad put together a 27-5 run halfway through the second half, opening up a 33 point advantage. BU went on to cruise for a 83-48 victory, maximizing its lead at 37.

The BU squad saw four new starters for the new season, while eight players in total made their debut in an Eagles uniform. The newcomers combined to score 69 of the team's 83 points on Friday.

Esparza put on a show for the Eagles, tacking on 19 points. The sophomore transfer from Cal Poly went 7-12 from the field with a pair of treys from long range. Two more newcomers reached double figures in the win, including Nathan Medina (14) and Hunter Ruck (11).

Efficiency was a major factor in the win, as Biola shot above 50 percent from the field and from three-point range. On the flip side, the BU defense forced the Golden Eagles to shoot 27.3 percent from the floor and 21.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Despite only picking up four steals as a team, the Eagles put together an impressive defensive performance. BU consistently kept Cal State LA out of the paint and only allowed tough opportunities.

The painted area belonged to the visiting Eagles. Biola outscored CSULA 38-14 near the hoop, while grabbing 36 more rebounds as well. Reaping in rebounds resulted in 15 offensive boards for BU, leading to 17 second-chance points.

Maximo Milovich led the charge on the block. The 6-8 forward collected 15 rebounds, including four offensive boards to go along with six points. Wright and Ruck came in next in the rebounding column, logging nine each.

Everybody got involved on Friday afternoon with 10-of-11 Eagles scoring at least two points.

BU's home opener is set for Monday at 7:00 pm when they face off against Antelope Valley inside Chase Gym.
