Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Finding a Way

The Eagles picked up their third-straight win on Saturday, winning with a sudden death score from Caleb Hernandez.

LA VERNE, Calif. --- Clutch has been an apt word to describe the Biola men's water polo (13-16) this weekend. The squad capped off a three-win weekend with a sudden death victory over La Verne (6-18) on Saturday, courtesy of Caleb Hernandez.

The final score in the matchup was 15-14 for Biola through regulation, overtime, and sudden death periods. The separation between the two teams on the scoreboard never reached above three in the tightly contested game.

Biola seemed to seal the game, heading into the final minute of the fourth quarter with a 13-11 lead. The hosting La Verne Leopards responded though, tallying a goal at 38 seconds left to come within one and a tying tally with one second on the clock.

Two three-minute overtime periods commenced with the game hanging in balance. La Verne kept its momentum with a go-ahead goal in the opening three minutes, putting the pressure on Biola.

Nearly five minutes of gametime went by without any movement on the scoreboard. The last minute began to tick away with the Eagles needing a one goal to keep the game alive. A Leopard foul in the middle opened up an opportunity for BU with 12 seconds left in overtime. A quick pass to Dominic Hidalgo-Valecillo setup the goal for Biola, knotting the match at 14 and sending the game to a three minute sudden death period.

With the game on the line, the Eagles stepped it up. Hernandez took the ball along the left side and moved in with space in front of him. Being given room to work with, Hernandez took advantage with a shot to the upper right corner of the goal, tucking it in for the game-winner.

Hernandez saved his best for last, logging his lone goal of the game in the most crucial moment. For the second-straight contest, BU took the victory on a game-winner in the final minutes.

Five Eagles landed at least two goals on Saturday. Hidalgo-Valecillo and Nolan Rapp paced the team with three apiece. Rapp also added a pair of assists to contribute to five Biola scores. The team totaled 15 goals for the eighth time in 2022 and remained undefeated in such games.

Biola will return to action for their final regular season game on November 9 in a bout at Redlands at 4:00 pm.
