Never Give Up

Biola fought through the ups and downs against CMS to take their final game at home this season.

LA MIRADA --- A long Friday at the Splash Regional Aquatics Center saw an incredible end to the day. The margins were razor thin but ultimately the Biola Eagles (12-16) were able to take down the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (10-13) Stags for a 11-10 triumph.

The Eagles and Stags matchup capped off the round robin on Friday hosted by Biola.

The early going was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. The visiting Stags were able to get the upper hand in the first, landing three-straight goals and a 3-2 first period lead.

The second period began with CMS success, as they opened up a 5-2 lead with a pair of scores. Joshua Halopoff responded, finding the back of the net off an assist from Jonas Huckabay. BU matched the two goals from CMS before the end of the half with a fastbreak goal from Matthew Rodriguez

Exclusions really began to pile up for the Eagles by the end of the third period. Through 24 minutes of action, BU tallied nine exclusions, leading to seven powerplays and and two penalty shots. The advantages for CMS resulted in five goals for the visitors, keeping them neck-and-neck with Biola.

Despite the aggression, the Eagles made up ground and tied the game at eight, heading into the fourth. Four goals came through for BU in the period, including two from Gavin Oliver.

Once again, the Stags regained the momentum with two goals to start the fourth. A BU deficit only encouraged more offense, as the Eagles scored on back-to-back possessions with three minutes left in the contest. Matthew Vinson knotted the game at 10 with a clean goal from the middle.

With 1:18 on the clock, Kenny Wulf gave Biola its first lead since the opening score of the game. The senior snatched the ball from CMS and took it for a one man fastbreak. One-on-one with the keeper, Wulf pumped once and beat the goalie to the left for a 11-10 Biola lead.

One save from Joshua Dachenhausen and a defensive stop sealed the win for Biola.

Wulf was crucial for the Biola offense on Friday. Against the Stags, the senior righty collected five points with two goals and three assists.

The Eagles will finish their weekend slate with a road matchup against La Verne on Saturday at 11:00 am.
