Just Out of Reach

The Eagles were within striking distance of Concordia throughout Wednesday’s match but could not overcome CUI in the road loss.

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles and Concordia Golden Eagles mirrored each other through the middle of the game but small advantages for CUI made for a 10-8 finish in their favor.

An early goal in the second period created the first tie of the game courtesy of Maxwell Osborn. The powerplay evened the game at two goals apiece after eliminating a 2-0 BU deficit.

Throughout the second period, the two teams would have equal outputs at two goals each, moving the scoreline to a 4-3 CUI lead heading into halftime. Biola continued to maintain the pace with the hosting Golden Eagles with a 4-4 margin in the third quarter.

Dominic Hidalgo-Valecillo provided a highlight score to stop a three-goal swing for CUI, halfway through the third. The junior showed off his arm strength from long range, tucking the shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

Kenny Wulf, Jonas Huckabay and Osborn each added a tally before the end of the third to give the Eagles the momentum. With just eight minutes left, the Eagles still remained down by one at 8-7.

The Golden Eagles responded with stout defense in the fourth. CUI held BU scoreless until the final ten seconds of the game, while scoring twice themselves, leading to the 10-8 final.

For the 10th time this season, Wulf found the back of the net at least two times. Osborn also landed a pair of goals, doing so for the 14th time this season.

Biola will return home for a round robin at Splash Regional Aquatics Center, starting at 9:00 am on Friday.
