Second Half Surge

The Eagles separated from Ottawa in the second half on the way to a 15-8 victory.

LA MIRADA --- Friday's round robin at the Splash Regional Aquatics Center began with a bout between the Biola Eagles (11-16) and the Ottawa Spirit (9-14). Biola started the day strong, tallying a 15-8 win in its morning matchup.

The win for the Eagles got the day kicked off, as four teams came to La Mirada for a round robin hosted by Biola. The four teams were set for a day of four games, two games for each team.

BU and OUAZ were quick to the trigger with goals coming in early and often. A combined nine goals came in from the two teams in the opening period, leading to a 5-4 lead for the Spirit.

After the first eight minutes, the defense of the Eagles stepped up. BU allowed just three more goals the rest of the way, one score in each period. More diligent and aggressive play from Biola limited the Spirit's chances at the net, helping the keepers stop any attack that got through. The Eagles employed all three of their goalies, as the trio combined for seven saves in the match.

The lead changed in the second period with goals from Maxwell Osborn and Gavin Oliver, giving BU the 6-5 lead. OUAZ responded to knot the game at six but with one second left in the first half, Adam LaVoy cashed in on a powerplay to regain the advantage for Biola at the break.

A close game broke open for BU in the second half. Four unanswered scores from the Eagles created a five goal cushion for the host squad. The BU squad took advantage of penalties from OUAZ, scoring off of a pair of exclusions and a five-meter penalty to move far ahead.

Biola added four more goals in the final period with four different Eagles finding the back of the net. The win marked the sixth time Biola notched 15 goals this season and each time meant a victory.

Kenny Wulf led the way in the scoring column at four, while four Eagles tallied at least two goals. Dominic Hidalgo-Valecillo was the main facilitator, dishing out three assists in the contest.

Making an impact on both sides of the pool, Caleb Hernandez influenced the game with three steals, one goal and one assist.

Biola will be back in the pool on Friday afternoon, taking on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the final game of the day.
