The BU women’s soccer squad was unable to score on Wednesday, falling 1-0 to Azusa Pacific.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola soccer looked to get back on track on Wednesday night in a cornerstone cup matchup on the road. The Eagles kept it close with the Azusa Pacific Cougars (6-3-3, 3-1-1 PacWest) but one goal from the home team was enough to knock off Biola (3-9-1, 2-4-0 PacWest).

The first half went by quietly with neither team able to impact the scoreboard. 12 combined shots leaned towards the hosting Cougars with nine. The possession time favored Azusa Pacific but the BU defense held its ground to keep the match even at the break.

Savanna Tavares drew her fourth start in goal for 2022, logging all 90 minutes of the contest. The opening 45 minutes were perfect for the freshman, who collected both shots on-goal that came her way.

The pace of the match changed in the 54th minute with a run along the left side. The Cougars found an opening and connected on a low cross for a close range score.

BU tried to turn things around with long through balls up the middle. The offense was just out of touch though, missing the mark on most of the long passes. One push towards the opposite goal was noteworthy, as Leah Kakigi found herself in an advantageous position. The strong opportunity came up empty though with a solid tackle from the APU defense.

Abby Chavez and Christine Maranville offered another opportunity for an equalizer in the 83rd minute. Chavez took the pass from Maranville and carried the ball to the corner, before sending in a fantastic cross. Maranville was at the receiving end and sent in a shot that was quickly blocked by APU.

Tavares and the BU defense ultimately saw 23 shots by APU but only one got through for the 1-0 final in favor of the Cougars.

Biola will return home for its next contest, as they take on Hawaii Hilo and celebrate Senior Night at 4:00 pm on Saturday.
