Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Slow Start Sets Back Eagles

Biola Water Polo goes scoreless in the first quarter and ends up dropping to Whittier, 9-7.

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Biola Men's Water Polo had the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with a perennial NCAA Division III national power on Saturday as it faced Whittier College for the first time.

It was a strange contest as the two sides combined for just 16 goals, eight of which came in one quarter and another eight spread out throughout the other 24 minutes.

No goals in the first period, and another slow fourth quarter led to a Biola loss in an otherwise closely-contested affair. Whittier out-scored the Eagles 4-2 over the game's final 10 minutes. That two-goal differential would be the difference in this one as BU suffered a 9-7 loss to Whittier.

The scoring sequence to start the match was eerily similar to yesterday's first matchup, but in reverse and slowed significantly. The Poets opened the game with back-to-back scores, and this helped them to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. Then Biola scored two in the second period to tie the game and make it 2-2 at halftime.

Whittier would score the first two goals of the third quarter to assert their advantage once more. They would outscore the Eagles 7-5 over the course of the second half.

Maxwell Osborn scored three times in the losing effort. It's his seventh match this season with three or more goals. He increased his team lead and now has 43 goals this season.

Kenny Wulf (2), Nolan Rapp and Joshua Halopoff were the other goal scorers for BU. The Eagles drop to 6-13 overall, while Whittier improved to 6-9.
