Eagles Down Panthers

The men’s water polo team downed Chapman University 16-13 at the Axelrood Aquatics Center.

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- A big fourth quarter gave the Biola University men's water polo team the edge against Chapman University in their 16-13 victory at the Axelrood Aquatics Center.

The Eagles (7-13 overall) received some sweet revenge after losing to the Panthers (8-8 overall) in their first two encounters this season.

Every match has been a tight battle between Biola and Chapman, where either team could have prevailed. However, BU finally caught the breaks they needed to take home the win.

Chapman led by as much as four goals in the second quarter before Biola started to bridge the gap. Dominic Hidalgo-Valecillo scored the final goal of the second quarter and the Eagles used that momentum to make an early impression in the third where Maxwell Osborn, Jonas Huckabay, Matthew Rodriguez, and Hidalgo-Valecillo scored the next four goals.

Hidalgo-Valecillo's goal gave Biola the 10-9 lead.

Chapman proceeded to tie up the match (10-10), but the Eagles held their composure and stepped up to the challenge. With 1:20 on the clock, John Grasso found the net which gave BU the one-goal advantage (11-10).

The persistent Panthers would squeeze in the game-tying goal before the fourth quarter where Biola would jump ahead and close the door on CU.

Biola outscored Chapman 5-2 in the final frame, courtesy of a combined effort from Joshua Halopoff and Grasso.

Nine Eagles scored in their 16-13 victory. Grasso led the offensive effort with a career-high of five goals. Halopoff was close behind him with three and Hidalgo-Valecillo followed with two.

Mitchell Carpenter and Joshua Dachenhausen  split time in the goal where they made a combined effort of 17 saves.

The Eagles play next Thursday, October 6 at 1 p.m. against Fresno Pacific at the Splash Aquatics Center.
