Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Back-to-Back

Two games in two days resulted in two wins for the Eagles, as they defeated Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday night.

LA MIRADA --- In the second game of a back-to-back, Biola women's basketball (10-5, 6-2 PacWest) maintained control throughout the night to take down Hawaii Hilo (7-5, 4-4 PacWest), 67-55. The Eagles dominated the second quarter to propel them to their fourth-straight win against a PacWest opponent.

Biola has a tough task ahead, facing off five times this week, including two games in two days to start the week and three games in three days to finish the week. The team started strong with a pair of victories between Monday and Tuesday. With the 12-point win on Tuesday against UHH, BU took down both Hawaii foes by a grand total of 22 points.

On Tuesday night, the Biola defense was dominant around the perimeter. The Vulcans failed to sink one three-pointer in the contest, while connecting on 35.5 percent of their field goal attempts. Stephanie Lee and Aysia Johnson were effective with four steals apiece.

The top all-around effort came in from Jordan Rabe, who notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. The double-double was her fourth of the season. Rabe lived in the paint, posting an efficient 77.8 field goal percentage with seven field goals.

Following a closely played first stanza, Biola hit their big run in the second quarter. Amiah Simmons led the Eagles on a 17-4 run with 10 points of her own. In the five minute stretch, Simmons was great at getting into the paint and drawing contact from the defense, resulting in seven free throws for the freshman. Four Eagles scored in the rally, while hitting five of six shot attempts.

A 23-10 advantage in the second period boosted Biola to a 41-26 halftime lead.

The double-digit lead would remain throughout the rest of the competition. In the third quarter, the smallest lead of the second half for BU turned into the largest lead with an 11-0 run. The Eagles scored on four-straight possessions, while holding the Vulcans scoreless to open up a 21-point edge. Hawaii Hilo never mounted a serious comeback attempt, as the Eagles cruised in for the 67-55 victory.

Simmons kept up her strong play on the offensive end, logging her 14th outing with at least 10 points through 15 games in the 2021-22 season. On Tuesday, the freshman piled on 19 points with two old fashioned three-point plays.

"I'm proud of us sticking together and pulling this one out," said Laila Walker.

The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways on Thursday with another home contest against Academy of Art at 5:30 pm.
