Chavez Goal Not Enough

The Eagles suffered their first defeat of 2021, falling to the Chico State Wildcats, 3-1.

LA MIRADA --- Biola was the team to strike first on Monday but ultimately came up short in the Labor Day matchup. The visiting Wildcats posted three unanswered goals to complete the 3-1 win over the Eagles.

Monday's competition was a morning bout that brought sunny and hot La Mirada weather. Both teams relied heavily on substitutions to battle the tough conditions.

Abby Chavez and Serena Andrade saw their first action in the 22nd minute, coming off the bench for Biola. Fresh legs made a difference, as the duo combined for the opening goal of the match.

Andrade made a run along the left side of the box to start the offensive play. With just enough space, the freshman sent a great cross to the back post with her left foot. The running Chavez converted on the pass, heading the ball into the back of the net, giving BU the 1-0 advantage. The tally marked the first goal of her career.

Chico State bounced back with a successful run in the 35th minute. Madison Parsons deflected a ball down the middle, redirecting it just enough to sneak in for the score. The match proceeded into the halftime break, tied up at one apiece.

With Jess Hase sidelined for the Eagles, BU freshman Jordyn Provience took the pitch for the first time in a Biola uniform. The Point Loma transfer got the start in the BU backline, logging 53 minutes of action.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Wildcats came out aggressive. The visitors were relentless on the attack, creating plenty of opportunities resulting in 15 shots and 11 shots on-goal. Two shots in the second half made it through, giving Chico State the 3-1 win.

The effort in goal was tag-teamed by Anna Boyer and Briana Ruelas who combined for eight saves. Ruelas tied a career-high with five saves in the contest.

With the loss, BU moved to 1-1 on the season and will return to action on the road against CSU San Marcos on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
