Cougars Sneak Past Eagles

Second half struggles tripped up the Eagles in back-to-back contests, falling to the Cougars on Saturday.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- A Biola lead following the first 45 minutes of action matched the beautiful Saturday afternoon weather. Unfortunately, the second half saw a change of pace, as the hosting Cal State San Marcos Cougars stormed back for a 2-1 win over BU.

The team in control for the entire first half was the Eagles. BU logged more shots, saves and corner kicks, while committing less fouls.

BU goalkeeper Anna Boyer blanked the host squad, posting 45 scoreless minutes in the first half and a total of 66 minutes for the contest. The sophomore picked up her third start in as many games and nabbed a total of four saves on the day.

Strong play around the ball led to a Christine Maranville score in the 30th minute. The junior notched her third-career goal to give Biola the 1-0 advantage. Halie Jamir set up the score with a great cross with her left foot, arriving at the feet of Maranville for the easy tally.

The halftime break was just what the Cougars needed, as they made the necessary adjustments to make a run back into the match.

CSUSM evened the match in the 60th minute, intercepting a pass right in front of the Biola goal and quickly turning it into a score. In total, the Cougars compiled 13 shots in the second half with nine landing on-target.

The Cougar's game-winner came just seven minutes later with a free kick near midfield, following a foul on Biola. The set piece took a bounce in the box and was then headed in by a sprinting Cougar at the back post.

The 2-1 lead would hold out for the Cougars, as CSUSM improved to 3-0 on the season and the Eagles moved to 1-2.

Katelyn Penner was aggressive from her midfielder position, launching three shots with two on-goal.

The BU offense has been well-balanced through the season so far. The team has posted a goal in all three matches, with a different Eagle tallying each of those goals.

Biola will return to action at home, taking on CSU Los Angeles on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
