Bounced Back

Biola Volleyball earns its first win of the 2021 season, defeating Alaska Fairbanks 3-1

ANCHORAGE, Ak. --- After a tough five-set loss to open the season, Biola proved that it can bounce back and finish the job as the Eagles earned their first win of the season after defeating Alaska Fairbanks 3-1.

It took the Eagles and Head Coach Aaron Seltzer only two games to pick up the first win of season and Seltzer's 486th career win. The win comes in Seltzer's 20th season at the helm of the program.

"That was a really big win," said Seltzer. "We needed that after last nights tough match."

Madison Beebe recorded 15 kills on 36 swings as Biola Volleyball (1-1) topped Alaska Fairbanks (3-4) 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-18 in the second match this season at the Alaska Airlines Center on Friday night.

"Madi played out of her mind," comment Seltzer. "She's playing her game right now and has matured tremenously this season."

Beebe was efficient on the night, tallying 15 kills, a new career high, while hitting a team best .306 hitting percentage. Raegan Tjepkema added 10 kills on 25 attempts, recording her second double-digit kill match of the season.

The Eagles continued their threat offensively from the service line with five aces. Tjepkema led the charge with three aces while Beebe and Sami Hover each tallied one ace.

Tjepkema, Biola's block leader for the past two seasons, continued her hot start as middle blocker recorded six blocks at the net.

Seltzer credits the team on both sides of the ball closing out the win, "We had some key block late and at the end our servers were really tough."

Emily Smith contributed on both sides of the ball with four blocks and seven kills. Smith also logged six digs, passing really well and making a difference in the back row for the Eagles.

Vanessa Garcia recorded her second double-double of the season in just as many games. The setter connected with her hitters the entire night, collecting 34 assists while adding 12 digs. "Vanessa was very active at the net tonight," commented Seltzer. " Her decision making later in the game was really fun to watch."

The Eagles had three players record double-digit digs as Hover led the team with 20 and Abby Brewster added 14 of her own to join Garcia's 12 on the night.

While the Eagles proved they can bounce back after a tough loss, Biola will face another challenge as it takes on the first double-header of the season. The Eagles first match of the day is against Texas A&M at 9:30 A.M., in their second game they will face off against Indianapolis at 5 P.M.
