Time to Focus on the PacWest

Biola shifts its focus to PacWest play, following a 2-0 defeat to Cal Poly Pomona.

POMONA, Calif. --- The BU women's soccer squad finished off its non-conference slate with a road bout at Cal Poly Pomona (4-2-0). The Broncos got the better of the Eagles in a 2-0 Monday night competition.

Offensive action littered the first half of the first half on Monday. The two teams combined for 11 shots and a pair of corner kicks through the initial 23 minutes of the match.

Biola's best attacks came within that flux of early opportunities. Jazmin Montalvo made the first strong run, receiving a great lead pass from Christine Maranville. The freshman made a move to the inside to beat a defender and just had the goalie in her path. The CPP keeper sprinted out of the goal and dove in front of the incoming shot from Montalvo to deny the BU attack.

In the 17th minute, BU found momentum again with a Maranville pass. The junior sent in a high-arching cross that bounced beyond a cluster of players, including the CPP keeper. Mason Stansberry found the ball with her left foot and volleyed it towards the empty net. The tough shot sailed just a bit too high, glancing off the crossbar.

The hosting Broncos impacted the scoreboard in the first half with back-to-back shots. Anna Boyer nabbed a save with the first shot from CPP but the deflected attempt fell back at the feet of the Broncos, who sent it to the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

On the night, Boyer collected five saves, extending her streak to four-straight matches with at least five stops.

Cal Poly Pomona added to its lead in the 88th minute, finishing off the 2-0 win.

Biola completed its non-conference schedule with a 2-4-1 overall record. The team's PacWest action will begin on Thursday with a home match against Academy of Art.
