One Goal One Win

One tally from the Eagles was enough to take down Stanislaus State in the team’s season opener.

LA MIRADA --- An afternoon affair between the Biola Eagles and the Stanislaus State Warriors was a close-knit 90-minute battle. A goal for BU in the 80th minute made the difference in the contest, as the Eagles scored the 1-0 win in their season opener.

The Eagles (1-0) played a balanced game on Thursday, making runs at the goal and snuffing out Warrior attacks. An empty scoreline carried through 79 and a half minutes at Al Barbour Field.

Sarah Freed broke the 0-0 tie with the game-winner from point-blank range. The BU forward put pressure on the Warrior defense, stealing the ball in the box and beating the goalie in a one-on-one faceoff.

Head coach Erin Brunelle was proud of the way her offense played in the win, "We're asking a lot of our attackers and wide players and they really stepped up, especially in the heat and with all the rotations and changes we were making. They fought to work together and that is a staple of our team."

Freed came up big in the reserve role, entering the game as a substitute six minutes prior to her first goal for the Eagles. "I just wanted to work as hard as I can and never give up, as well as play for my teammates and play for God," commented Freed.

The BU defense shined en-route to a shutout victory. The Biola backline logged all 90 minutes of the contest, including Jess Hase, Chloe Laurin and Rachel Melvin

In goal, Anna Boyer notched her first-career clean sheet for the win. The sophomore added seven saves through the 90 minutes on the pitch, including five saves in the first half.

"We have some new players back there in some new spots and so game by game, session by session they're starting to gel together and learn how to communicate," added Brunelle about her defense. "I'm super proud of the effort they put forth."

The Eagles will look to remain undefeated with another home matchup on Monday at 11:00 am against Chico State.
