Quality Win

Biola returned to the win column on Tuesday, logging a shutout against Cal State Los Angeles.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles played efficiently and effectively on Tuesday night at Al Barbour Field to earn a 1-0 victory. The second shutout of the season came against Cal State Los Angeles, as the BU women's soccer squad improved to 2-2 on the year.

Anna Boyer starred for the Eagles in her second win of 2021, as the BU goalkeeper. The sophomore matched her career-best for saves with seven in the competition.

The defense played their part, keeping the Golden Eagle offensive pressure at bay. Freshman Chloe Laurin stepped up with a huge save in the 32nd minute, clearing the ball, as it headed straight towards the back of the empty net. The clutch play kept the visitors off the scoreboard with the first half slowly coming to a close.

Despite the scoreless first half, both teams found opportunities to put pressure on the opposing goal. Sarah Freed was at the point of attack for two BU runs, launching an impressive shot from just outside the box, which was narrowly sent away by CSULA keeper Olivia Spanish.

The Golden Eagles were favored in ball possession through the first 45 minutes of action. The visitors notched eight shots compared to just two from the Eagles. After the final buzzer rang, the shot count remained lopsided with the visitors sending in 16 more shots than BU.

The discrepancy in shots did not impact the scoreboard, as Biola battled efficiently on the attack. Of the four shots in the contest, BU offered three shots on-goal with one landing home in the 57th minute.

Katelyn Penner delivered for the Eagles to break the scoreless tie. A corner kick for Biola started the opportunity, before the defense pushed the ball out of danger. The Eagles regained control and put the ball at the feet of Penner at the top of the box. The midfielder weaved through defenders and finished the score, scooting it to the back of the net with her left foot.

The three-time All-PacWest award-winner notched her ninth-career goal with the tally, while marking her first score of 2021.

BU will return to the pitch on Saturday with a road matchup against Western Washington at 7:00 pm.
