Success at Home

The Biola women’s soccer squad took Al Barbour field for the first time in their 2021 campaign, besting CMS in an exhibition match.

LA MIRADA --- On Saturday night, the Biola fans came out in full force to support the BU women's soccer team in an exhibition match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Eagles utilized their home field advantage to pick up the 2-1 victory.

An exhibition does not count towards the team's season record or statistics but that did not deter Biola from digging deep for the win. Right from the opening kick-off, BU put the pressure on and dominated the possession of the ball.

The strong offensive play paid off in the 12th minute with a successful run from Halie Jamir. The junior pushed the ball deep into the goalie box, before beating a defender and delivering a great shot past the keeper.

The deficit seemed to spark a fire in the visiting Athenas, as they flipped the script in the rest of the first half. CMS fought for the ball and made accurate passes to move into the attacking third. Kaitlyn Helfrich evened the match with a deep shot which landed just inside the opposite post, tying the match at 1-1.

The halftime stats reflected the tie score with each team logging three shots but Biola led the way with three corner kicks to just one from CMS.

A back and forth affair resumed, as the final 45 minutes began to tick away. Neither team would budge in order to keep the score stagnant.

Biola broke the silence in the 66th minute of the contest. Frances Andrade sent the ball forward to the feet of Katelyn Penner, who quickly passed it down the right side to the sprinting Abby Chavez. The sophomore forward took two touches before kicking it right over the goalie's outstretched arms and into the back of the net.

The impressive score gave the Eagles a 2-1 advantage with just over 24 minutes to defend it.

Biola did just that. The defense stood strong, fighting off seven Athena shots. Anna Boyer collected three saves in the second half, earning the win in the net. Chloe Laurin and Jessica Hase cemented the backline for BU, logging all 90 minutes on the pitch.

BU will return to action at home in its first countable contest on September 2 against Stanislaus State.
