Men’s Tennis Storms Past Point Loma

The Eagles evened the season series with Point Loma with a 4-0 rout on Saturday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A slow start could not deter the Eagles, as the host squad surged to a 4-0 victory over the Sea Lions on Saturday. The win showed overall improvement for the BU team, who avenged a loss to Point Loma in February.

"It's the best win for us this season," commented head coach David Goodman. "I feel like we played probably to the maximum of our potential, which feels great as a team and as a coach."

PLNU was the early aggressor in the weekend matchup, leading in all three doubles matches in the early going.

Biola woke up quickly on all three courts, turning the tables and finding the advantage. Sebastian Herrera and Erik Martinez reached the finish line first, logging a 6-3 triumph. Once again, Martinez scored a doubles win for his 11th-straight this season.

The momentum was fully captured with the No. 2 spot in doubles. Isaac Cordova and Alex Sedeno put together an impressive showing to give BU the doubles point.

"Those guys (Cordova and Sedeno) played incredible. That really got the tide turned in our favor heading into the singles," added Goodman.

The top three flights in singles play all favored Biola, giving the Eagles a quick victory. Antonio Rosales Varona provided the clincher, winning his second-consecutive singles match. The sophomore cruised in his fourth win this season, taking it in straight-sets.

Alexei Prokopchuk and Sebastian Herrera notched the other two singles victories, as Herrera won by retirement in the first set. Prokopchuk found revenge in his matchup, taking down Tyler Davis, who defeated the BU righty in their last meeting. The sophomore Eagle jumped in front early with a 6-1 set number one and finished the match with a 6-3 rout in the second set.

With the two teams playing to clinch, the rest of singles play went unfinished.

BU improved to 9-5 on the season with Saturday's win and will look to build off of their victory in their next matchup on Tuesday against Azusa Pacific.
