No. 8 APU Sneaks Past Eagles

The hosting Biola men’s tennis team battled it out against No. 8 Azusa Pacific and fell 4-1.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A tough, hard-fought competition between the Eagles and the eighth-ranked Cougars resulted in an APU victory. After narrowly winning the doubles point, Azusa Pacific piled on three singles triumphs to win the day.

The opening point of the match was hotly contested. Erik Martinez and Sebastian Herrera struck first, notching a 6-2 victory on court No. 2. The win for BU marked the first loss in a doubles matchup since March 13 for the visiting Cougars.

Martinez and Herrera continued their dominance as a tandem for the Eagles. The duo moved to 7-0 on the season, while Martinez collected his 12th-straight doubles triumph.

With the No. 3 spot favoring APU, the doubles point was going to be decided by the No. 1 flight. Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona battled back from a 5-4 deficit to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. The APU duo of Jakob Schnaitter and Leyton Bohren built an early lead and would not relinquish it to score the point for APU.

The following singles play resulted in more points for Azusa Pacific. With the first two singles matches falling in APU's favor, the visitors grabbed a 3-0 lead.

Rosales Varona responded with a spectacular performance from the No. 3 spot. The sophomore picked up his fifth win of the season, defeating Ryan Nuno. Earlier this season, Nuno got the better of Rosales Varona but the BU righty showed his improvement with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on Tuesday.

Before seeing his match cut short and being declared unfinished, Alex Sedeno had built himself a lead on court No. 5. The Spain native was stopped while on pace to win his match for the fourth time this season.

Biola (9-6) will return to action on Thursday in a road competition at Concordia.
