Tourney Cut Short

The Biola men’s tennis squad dropped their quarterfinals matchup against No. 12 Hawaii Hilo in the PacWest Tournament.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- A Thursday afternoon at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club held the PacWest Championship Quarterfinals. Seventh-seeded Biola opened the tournament with a bout against second-seeded and 12th-ranked Hawaii Hilo.

BU battled in the tough matchup but came up short, falling for the second time this season at the hands of the Vulcans. UHH snuck out with the doubles point and grabbed the opening three singles matches to post a 4-0 victory.

The doubles competition featured good action between the two squads. After a quick win on court No. 3 for the Vulcans, the two remaining contests were close-knit matchups. Hawaii Hilo led on both courts, 5-4, and crossed the finish line at the No. 1 spot to pick up the 1-0 advantage.

Hawaii Hilo continued to feed the flame in singles play on Thursday. Three singles matches wrapped up in straight-sets to give No. 12 UHH the victory, allowing them to advance in the conference tournament.

From the No. 2 spot, Sebastian Herrera had put himself in a great position before having his match cut short. The sophomore logged a 6-3 win in the opening set, giving him the upperhand in the contest. Alessio Demichelis responded with a win of his own in the second set but Herrera gathered a 4-1 lead in the final set, prior to the conclusion of the match.

Isaac Cordova also had the edge for the Eagles when the day ended. The freshman came out on top in a tough first set, winning 7-5. The match would go unfinished before set number two would conclude.

BU will now enter the consolation bracket in the PacWest Men's Tennis Championships with a Saturday competition against sixth-seeded Metro State at 1:00 pm.
