Always Working

Biola was victorious on Friday, defeating Metro State to move on to the fifth-place match on Saturday.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- BU men's tennis entered the consolation bracket of the PacWest Tournament and showed out. The seventh-seeded Eagles took down sixth-seeded Metro State in a 4-0 rout on Friday afternoon at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.

Biola avenged a narrow loss to the Roadrunners earlier this season, reversing the results from two matches to make quick work of MSU on Friday.

The first difference came in doubles play, as Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona offered a strong performance from the first flight. The duo flew past MSU for a 6-3 triumph.

Courts two and three were close-knit contests with the doubles point still up for grabs. Metro State wrapped up with a win first, taking the set on court No. 3.

The No. 2 spot would determine the first point of the day and the action did not disappoint. Erik Martinez and Sebastian Herrera faced off against David Kijak and Jack McDermott in a nail-biter that ended with a tiebreaker. At six games apiece, the two duos embarked on a race to seven points but the battle remained close as BU's tandem came out victorious in a win-by-two scenario, 8-6.

With a 1-0 edge and all the momentum, Biola let the good times roll, winning the first set in five-of-six singles contests. Rosales Varona was the first to finish, notching his seventh win of the season (6-3, 6-2). The sophomore flipped the script on Alejandro Martinez-Morilla, who won their matchup in March.

The BU lead continued to grow with a fantastic performance from Herrera. The sophomore improved his season record to 7-4 on Friday, winning in straight-sets (7-6, 6-2).

Isaac Cordova provided the match-clinching point for BU with a straight-sets outing from the No. 4 spot. The freshman righty posted matching score lines of 6-4, helping BU seal the sweep over MSU.

The remaining three matches went unfinished with each reaching the third set.

With the win, BU advances into the fifth-place match in the consolation bracket, taking on fifth-seeded Point Loma at 1:00 pm.
