Break Out the Brooms

Biola sweeps No. 24 Azusa Pacfic in three straight sets.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- On Wednesday evening, BU took down the No. 24 Azusa Pacific Cougars in three straight sets 25-23, 25-17, 25-17. The Eagles out performed their longtime rival in nearly every stat on the night, with the most impressive stat being BU's 41 kills to APU's 27.

For the Eagles, the win is no fluke. Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's focus for this season has been development. He has heavily relied on his veterans to help develop the young new talent and show them what Biola Volleyball is all about. Wednesday night's victory is the result of mentorship and teamwork.

"To be honest, we didn't pay much attention to their ranking tonight. Our focus was on getting better and tonight we got better," said Seltzer. "We've seen good progress and are playing a lot better together. Our defense was great, freshmen stepped up when they got opportunities and we took advantage of APU's mistakes."

The box score tells the story of the match, domination by Biola as the Eagles outperformed APU in points (56.5-33), kills (41-27), aces (10-2), blocks (5-4), assists (39-25) and digs (32-25).

BU had contributions from all over the court. Vanessa Garcia, Madison Beebe and Raegan Tjepkma led the team in kills with six a piece. Garcia continues to demonstrate her veteran leadership as she also led the team in aces (4), assists (16) and added three digs to her night.

The trio of Tjepkma, Abigail Copeland and Bekah Roth provided BU with great defense at the net as they accounted for all of BU's blocks in the match.

Senior Sami Hover continues her quest to 1,700 career digs. Hover added 13 in the Cornerstone Cup and now sits at 1,687 career digs.

While the stats speak for themselves, perhaps the most impressive factor on the evening was how many players stepped up and played with different lineups. Seltzer has focused on giving his team various rotations to work with on the court, tonight he and his staff got great looks at some of their newcomers.

The coaching staff was please with what they saw from freshmen Mary Mcdonnell and Allie Tillery as well as redshirt freshman Brie Nishimura, all of whom have all seen limited court time this season. Meanwhile redshirt freshmen Dominique Kirton and Dani Bryant and sophomores Marissa Price, Madison Beebe, Raegan Tjepkema, Abigail Copeland and Abby Brewster have continued to excel in the opportunities they are given and are proving to be valuable assets to the programs future.

If the Eagles continue to make the progress that they have made so far this season, this "young" team and their veteran leadership will continue setting up the program for success.

The win improves BU to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in PacWest play. Biola is back in action on April 7 as they head to San Diego to take on the Point Loma Sea Lions.
