Marathon Win for BU

Eagles earn the 13-5 victory over PLNU in the near four-hour game one of Saturday’s doubleheader

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- BU Baseball recorded their first win of the season behind a dominant performance by starting pitcher Andrew Beauvais and great plate appearances. The Eagles won game one of Saturday's doubleheader with a final score of 13-5.

Beauvais had his best stuff when BU needed it most. The righty went five innings with four strikeouts, before giving up his first hits and runs of the day. Beauvais only surrendered three hits on the day while giving up two earned runs.

After a silent day at the plate on Friday, Biola's offense could not be stopped as they were swinging hot bats right out of the gate.

Two errors and two hits contributed for a big first inning for the Eagles with BU scoring four in the first. Catcher Ben Smith reached first on a fielding error by PLNU's shortstop. BU was content moving from station to station as Jacob Portaro advanced Smith with a single in shallow left field.

With two outs and two runners on, Ryan Gallegos worked a four pitch walk to load the bases. It looked as if Brandon Cody grounded into a sure out, but fortunately for the Eagles PLNU's third baseball made a throwing error, allowing two to cross the plate.

The Eagles were not done, Brandon Thomas was patient at the plate and earned the walk to load the bases. It was Tyler White's turn to step up to the plate. With the bases juiced, White proceeded to drop a base hit into left center bringing in two more runs for BU.

The offense couldn't be stopped. In the bottom of the fifth, errors continued to haunt the Sea Lions as a fielder's choice led to a throwing arrow. Not only was there no out recorded, but a run came across and BU placed two runners in scoring position.

The error would prove costly as Jacob Portaro launched a three-run homer over the left field wall to bring in three runs for BU. RobertAnthony Cruz followed up Portaro's long ball with a shot to right field for his second homerun in just as many days.

The five run fifth inning would eventually come to an end moving the score to 9-0 in favor of BU.

Beauvais returned to the mound after a long fifth inning. After retiring the leadoff batter, PLNU's Michael Whiteside  worked the count full and broke up Beauvais' no-hitter.
After giving up his first hit of the day, PLNU worked another single off Beauvais, scoring the runner on second for a 9-1 ballgame. The Sea Lions would bring across one more run in the inning for a 9-2 score.

Biola would bring three more runs across in the bottom of the fifth on three hits. Connor Kostecka was able to lay down a perfect bunt with the pitcher unable to make the play to reach safely at first. Brandon Smith added a single while Portaro added his third hit of the day with double to left field.

Johnny Sage and Connor Kostecka each tallied two hits and two runs a piece for BU while Jacob Portatro went 3-4, scoring two runs and driving in six RBI. Keith Walker put up two  scoreless frames out of the pen in the 13-5 victory.
