Big Inning Bites Again

The Eagles suffered the loss in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader against PLNU, 10-2.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Baseball could not overcome the big inning again on Saturday afternoon as they dropped the 10-2 contest against PLNU at Eagles Diamond. The loss drops BU to 1-7 on the season as they look to bounce back in their next contest on March 31.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning. Biola starter Matthew Watson faced the minimum although he surrendered two hits in the inning. After nearly turning a double play, the ball skipped away from first baseman Ryan Gallegos. Heads up defense allowed Gallegos to recover quickly as he made the diving play to tag out the runner at first who had rounded the bag, ending the inning for PLNU.

The second inning didn't factor a whole lot into the decision for the Eagles as they surrendered two runs on four hits while stranding two. Watson was pulled after completing two innings, he allowed the two earned runs on five hits.

Connor Butler got the call from the pen to start the third inning. Butler put up a scoreless frame to start his day, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts.

After the first two batters were sat down on strikes in the bottom of the third, RobertAnthony Cruz doubled to left-center field, putting a man in scoring position for Ryan Gallegos. Gallegos was able to bring in Cruz on a single while advancing to second on an error.

After smooth sailing through the third, Butler faced trouble early on in the top of the fourth inning. A leadoff single turned into an RBI as Butler gave up a homer on a 1-0 count. He was able to bounce back and retired the next batter with a swinging strikeout. Back-to-back walks force Calhoon to call on his pen once again.

With two men on, Carson Cody toed the rubber. Cody walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, he faced four batters before Calhoon called on AJ Ortiz to enter the game. PLNU would tally six runs off three hits and five free passes in the inning.

BU was held scoreless for the fourth and fifth inning before Brandon Cody launched a no doubter over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 8-2. The Sea Lions would bring two more runs across in the top of the seventh for a final score of 10-2 in the scheduled seven-inning game.

Ben Smith, RobertAnthony Cruz, Ryan Gallegos, Brandon Cody, Brandon Thomas and Tyler White all recorded a hit each for BU. Cruz and Thomas recorded doubles while Cody also hit for extra bases with his homerun.

The Eagles are back in action on March 31 as they take on NCAA Division III Chapman University at Hart Park in Orange, Calif. For updates check athletics.biola.edu
