Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Johnson Sets New Career-Best

Eagles come up short with second-half comeback as Aysia Johnson drops 24.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball had to face a top-25 team on the road on Friday evening without a player who went for 30+ last time out. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team met the challenge and rose to the occasion, giving No. 24 Concordia Irvine all it could handle in 40 good minutes.

Jazz Benn had to miss the game following an injury in practice, but Aysia Johnson and Stephanie Lee filled the scoring void effectively, combining for 40 points in a valiant effort at CUI that came up just short with a final score of 68-62.

Biola had to do most of its scoring in the paint as the three-point shot was not as effective in this one. BU took a season-low 16 three-point attempts with just three of them going in, but Biola held a 36-28 advantage down low.

BU also managed to out-rebound Concordia 33-29 in a night where it had the advantage in the post. The scoring volume just was not there when it needed to be for BU. Aside from Lee and Johnson, the high scorer for Biola was Laila Walker with seven.

Concordia Irvine got up to a quick lead at 15-6 in the first five minutes and change. Biola cut it down to just four with free-throws from Johnson and a triple from Madi Chang, but could never quite find the lead or a tie. That was a theme for the night, as even in a closely contested second half BU never got closer than one.

CUI led by as many as 10 after an early run in the second quarter, but BU outscored Concordia 8-2 over the final five minutes of the third to get back in it at 29-25 at the break.

Another early-quarter run helped Concordia extend back out to as many as nine points in the third, but once again a late BU surge tightened things up. From 5:41 to 2:46 in the third BU scored five points in a row to get back within four. All five of those came from Johnson, three on an and-one and another two on a mid-range jumper.

A Lee three and successful Walker free throws cut it to as close as it got all game long at 42-41 CUI with 33 seconds left in the third. The hosts extended to 51-42 within the first two minutes of the fourth, which is what allowed CUI to withstand 12 fourth-quarter points for Johnson.

The point guard ultimately ended with a career-high 24 point night. She was 6-for-12 overall and an incredible 12-for-12 from the charity stripe. Biola was 15-for-17 overall from the free-throw line with Walker also going 3-for-3.

Lee finished with 16 points on 7-for-16 shooting. Concordia's leading scorer was reigning PacWest Conference SoCal Pod Player of the Week Michaela VanderKlugt.

Biola falls to 1-5 (0-5 PacWest). Concordia improves to 5-2 (4-1 PacWest). The two teams meet again at 5 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 6) inside of Chase Gym. The game will be live streamed free at the Biola Athletics YouTube.
