Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Super Saturday

Biola Women's Basketball got its first conference win of '21, upsetting Concordia Irvine.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- On Saturday, there was no lingering languishing over last night's loss at Concordia Irvine. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's Biola Women's Basketball team came out fired up and ready to play at home on Saturday, bringing the energy for a full 40 minutes in a thrilling 62-45 upset over No. 24 CUI.

Biola finally earned it's first PacWest Conference win of the 2021 season and did so in emphatic fashion. The Eagles have been on the verge of busting out all season long, with two of their five losses being just by three points and four of five being by eight points or fewer.

Things all came together for Nakamura's side in tonight's game, a game in which Biola only trailed once, and even that was just by one point and was for less than 20 seconds in the opening quarter.

All night long the Eagles' energy on the defensive end was disruptive for Concordia. Biola forced 20 turnovers out of their opponents, who came into this week averaging fewer than 16 turnovers-per-game in PacWest play.

Apart from the turnovers, Biola's prominence in the paint was the key to success in this one. Whether it was Jordan Rabe, Danita Estorga or a powerful Jana Thomas-Reid down low Biola was able to just about everything they wanted in side the paint.

Thirty-six of the Eagles' 62 points came from down low with Estorga and Rabe both finishing with 11 points and Thomas-Reid having a solid 11 minutes with five rebounds, three points (1-for-1) and two steals.

After Concordia's 20 seconds in front, Biola retook the lead at 8-7 and used a 10-0 run over the final 2:43 in the first quarter to take a firm grasp on the game. By the half that lead had swelled to 17 points at 37-20 and the visiting team looked shell shocked after they led wire-to-wire just 24 hours ago.

Biola would "win" each of the first three quarters to enter the fourth with a 51-28 advantage, which would grow immediately at the outset of the fourth with a made jumper by Stephanie Lee.

Lee would end this game with 17 points to lead all scorers. She shot 7-for-12 and made a trio of triples. The highest scorers on the Concordia side were Kennedy Fulcher and Michaela VanderKlugt, who each finished with 10.

Estorga and Rabe having their 11 made it three BU Eagles with more points than the top CU Eagles. The 45-point output is the lowest scoring tally for CUI since a game last January at Azusa Pacific.

Estorga was just one rebound shy of a double-double, ending with 11 points and nine rebounds to lead BU on the boards. She added three steals and a pair of assists to go with her nifty 5-for-10 shooting in a good night for the junior.

Biola out-rebounded CUI 39-32 and shot 10 points higher than the visiting Eagles with a 43 percent clip.

Concordia finished the game on a 13-2 run over the final 4:01, but by that point the deed was already done and Biola was all smiles at the final buzzer with their first win since Jan. 16 in hand.

The win helps Biola improve to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in PacWest Conference play. Concordia falls to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the PacWest. It the first loss for CUI since Jan. 22 as they came in winners of four straight.

Biola will turn its sights on Azusa Pacific () next week as the Eagles begin the second round of PacWest Conference SoCal Pod play. Biola will host the Cougars on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. APU hosts the first half of the home-and-home at 2 p.m. on Friday.
