Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles Play For Kay

Biola Women's Basketball dedicates game vs. APU to Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the second time in as many nights and the third time in four meetings this season, Biola Women's Basketball had to watch a fourth-quarter lead dissolve against their archrival Azusa Pacific in a gut-wrenching loss.

Both yesterday and today Biola held double-digit leads in the second half and saw them fall by the wayside as APU worked their way towards wins by five points (Friday) and seven points (83-76).

The result of the game is important, but even more important was the mission of the Biola Eagles side tonight. It was a Play4Kay night for Head Coach Alan Nakamura and squad as they donned pink warm-up gear, dedicated the game to their loved ones and raised awareness and funding for cancer research.

Biola built up as much as a 15-point lead in this one and led as late as with :29 seconds left, but the strong finish from APU was too much for the Eagles to overcome. The Cougars ended the game on a 21-5 run over just the final four minutes, ultimately scoring eight points (8-for-8 FT) in the final 29 seconds to seal another incredible comeback.

Biola used a 26-18 second quarter and a strong start to the third quarter to lead by as many as 15 with 13 minutes remaining. However, the visiting team had other plans, led in large part by 22 fourth-quarter points from the duo of Paige Uyehara and Kelly Heimburger. Uyehara had a monster night, ultimately ending as the game's leading scorer with 27 points. APU's star transfer Kayla Shaw also managed 20+ with a 23-point effort.

Jordan Rabe continued her breakout night in an extra-meaningful evening for the sophomore post player. She had 19 points, eight rebounds and a career-high four steals as she dedicated her performance in this one to her mother, Shelbie Rabe.

Stephanie Lee (13) and Aysia Johnson (11) also hit double figures for BU. It was great to have Johnson back in the lineup after missing on Friday. She made the most of her 20 minutes, going 3-for-5 from the field, 4-for-4 from the line and adding a rebound, an assist and a steal.

Stephanie Lee led Biola in rebounding for the second time this season and recorded her first career double-double with 10 boards to go along with her 13 points.

The loss drops Biola to 2-7 overall (1-7 PacWest). They will have another opportunity to prove themselves against a top team in the west next weekend vs. Point Loma (7-2, 6-2 PacWest). The Eagles host the Sea Lions at 2 p.m. Friday. The game will be live streamed for free at the Biola Athletics YouTube channel.
