Eagles Drown Sea Lions

Biola earns the overtime victory from No.20 Point Loma 96-93

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball earned a hard fought win against No.20 Point Loma. Free throws earned the Eagles the victory as they shot 73.8% from the line and were 8-8 in overtime. Head Coach Alan Nakamura was proud of the growth he saw from his team today especially at the foul line. "Our team has taken ownership and put extra work into their free throw shooting," their hard work and dedication was on full display today.

Point Loma opened up the scoring with 2-points from Cara Liggins and Biola was quick to respond with three points of their own as Madi Chang sank a three-pointer to give the Eagles a one point lead early on.

The Eagles opened the second quarter with a three-pointer by Stephanie Lee. Lee went on to have herself a career day, as she scored a career high 29 points for the Eagles and led all players on both teams with 40 minutes played in the overtime contest. Down two with 44 seconds remaining in the first half, Lee sunk two free throws to tie the game at 32. Lee's comfort at the line proved clutch yet again as she gave the Eagles two more points to give her team the lead going into the second half.

Lee's performance on the foul line wasn't her only strength today. Down two, Lee showcased her defense as she stole the ball from Point Loma and was able to draw contact in the paint. Going one for two this time at the line, Lee drew the Eagles within two points of the Sea Lions with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Tied up yet again, junior guard, Aysia Johnson found Madi Chang for a three-pointer giving the Eagles the advantage. Lee followed with a three-pointer of her own, assisted by Abigail Laberge. Again, Lee was good from downtown to give the Eagles a nine point advantage.

Biola entered the fourth quarter with a nine point lead and wasted no time adding to it as Jordan Rabe added two points of her own for the Eagles. Laila Walker chipped in with ten points and six assists, with one of her biggest shots being a three-pointer to give her team a 12 point advantage in the fourth.

Nakamura and the Eagles have struggled to hold onto leads late in the game this season and that proved to be the case yet again as they started to see their 12 point advantage slip away. With 39 seconds remaining in regulation, the Sea Lions fought back from a six point deficit to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Overtime was a battle of free throws as Point Loma was 4-7 and Biola a perfect 8-8 at the line. Aysia Johnson had a big performance in overtime adding six points of her own, she finished the day with 16 points and 7 assists.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura has this to say following his team's victory,  "I am excited for the team, they've shown so much character through such a tough year. They've shown that they can compete with really good teams like Point Loima, a team who really deserves to be No. 19 in the nation." Biola hopes that their late game struggles are behind them. The win improves Nakamura and his team to 3-8 overall (2-8 PacWest).

The Eagles will have another chance at the Sea Lions as they travel to  Point Loma for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Saturday. Follow along as the Eagles look to take the two game series from the Sea Lions at Point Loma.
