Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars Rally In 2nd Half

Biola can't hold onto its 17-point lead as APU defense wins the 2nd half.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Despite being without two of their regular starters, Biola Women's Basketball came flying out of the gate at Azusa Pacific on Friday afternoon. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's squad held APU to 22 percent shooting for most of the first-half to build a nearly 20-point lead in a surge to start.

Unfortunately for Biola, the Cougars locked down defensively in the second half and allowed the Eagles only 21 total second-half points to flip the game on its head and steal a 62-57 win on their home court. It's the fourth time in BU's six losses this season that the Eagles have been within six points of the victors.

Biola held APU to just 19 first-half points, including only eight total in the second corner. Biola's cause was aided by some really poor three-point shooting over that first 20 minutes. The Cougars were 1-for-11 from deep and 7-for-32 overall in the first half, helping Biola go into the break with a 36-19 advantage.

Once again it was Jordan Rabe leading the charge for BU in building that successful first frame. She was active on both ends to lead with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and also corral five first-half rebounds.

Biola's rebounding advantage is what gave the team life in the first half, but it's also what really slipped away in the second half. APU out-rebounded Biola 14-6 in the third quarter and outscored the Eagles 25-10 in the frame to send the game into its final quarter with just two points of breathing room in Biola's favor.

Big threes from Laila Walker kept Biola alive throughout the difficult second half. She hit two to help them maintain the lead in the third and added one more very late in the fourth to cut it to a one-possession game in the game's final minute.

In the end, Azusa Pacific managed to do their business at the free-throw line to secure the sound victory and take a 3-0 lead in the season series over BU. The Cougars made 10 fourth-quarter free throws to help the outpace Biola 18-11 in the final 10 minutes.

Rabe would finish up as the game's leading scorer for either team with 19 points. She added 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Walker set a new career-high with 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting.

Other notables include seven rebounds from Danita Estorga and three blocks in just eight minutes from Jana Thomas-Reid.

Biola falls to 2-6 (1-6 PacWest) with the loss, while Azusa Pacific improves to 5-3 (4-3 PacWest). These two teams get right back after it on Saturday as Biola hosts Azusa Pacific at 2 p.m. The game will be live streamed for free on the Biola Athletics YouTube channel.
