Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Close, But Not Quite

Biola Men's Tennis hangs in there with No. 14 CUI, but ultimately drops its first match.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- On another warm, sunny day at the Biola Tennis Center Biola Men's Tennis had a major early-season litmus test as the No. 14 Concordia Irvine Eagles came to town.

The final score line ended up in favor of the guests, 4-1, but that does not tell the full story as the two of the three unfinished matches had Biola in the lead and the third was in a nearly-knotted third set.

Biola's lone full match victory in this one came courtesy of Sebastian Herrera, who bounced back with set two and set three victories to clinch singles flight three for Biola.

Herrera lost his opener to Mike Jansen 6-3, but then managed to figure out his opponent with convincing 6-1 and 6-2 victories over the last two sets. He managed to get that third set win completed just minutes before Concordia Irvine clinched the match with a wins at singles no. 1, no. 4 and no. 2. The three-set victory pushes Herrera to 2-0 on the season.

In the unfinished singles matches, Andres Meneses lost a heartbreaking first set following an extra game before answering back with a huge 6-1 second-set win. He and CUI's Sofian Taybei were locked in a competitive third set when things were called to quits.

On court number five Alex Sedeno had a similar match going. He took a 7-5 win in the opening set and was knotted five games a piece in the second at the end.

Doubles play came first and was close on all three courts before going in favor of CUI, who took the top flight at 6-3 and no. 2 flight, 6-4. Herrera and Andres Meneses were up 5-4 when the doubles point was clinched by CUI's Patrick Wong and Jan Simon.

The loss is Biola's first of the new year, but helps the team understand a bit about what it needs to clean up and where it falls against a top-15 team in the country. The Eagles are 1-1 while Concordia Irvine improves to 1-0.

Next up for Biola is a road match at Point Loma next Saturday.
