Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Whale Of An Effort Not Enough

The Sea Lions overcome the challenge of six three-set matches to set down Biola, 4-1.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis and Point Loma battled for just about five hours on Saturday in the Eagles' second match of the season against a PacWest Conference foe. All six singles matches went into three sets in an epic battle before Point Loma managed to grab the victory at a 4-1 final score.

The Sea Lions took the early advantage in the match by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to seal that point with court three still locked in a 4-4 tilt. The close game scores throughout doubles should've been a good indicator of what was to come in the lengthy singles skirmishes later on.

Biola's lone match win on the afternoon came at the no. 4 singles spot as freshman Isaac Cordova wrapped up a three-set victory over Jasdeep Paintal. Cordova overcame a 6-4 first-set loss to win set two going away (6-2) and then clinch the match with a 6-4 finish. Cordova improved to 2-1 on the season with the big win.

By the time Cordova sealed that victory, Biola already found itself behind the eight ball with a 3-0 deficit due to PLNU wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona both bounced back with set two wins to extend their matches but were set down in the third.

With the Eagles trailing 3-1, the match came down to courts three, five and six and Sebastian Herrera, Alex Sedeno and Andres Meneses battling for Biola's chances. They had the opportunity to serve up Biola's first-ever two-match winning streak vs. Point Loma.

Unfortunately for BU, the comeback effort was cut short when the Sea Lions' David Strassburger managed to move on from a set one loss to upend Meneses at the no. 6 spot in the closest third set of the whole day. Meneses won the first set 6-4, Strassburger answered with a 6-3 mark in the second and then clinched the match with a 7-6 win in the third set, powered by a 7-5 tiebreaker win.

The loss drops Biola to 1-2 overall on the season. Head Coach David Goodman's bunch will be ready to bounce back this coming Saturday at California Lutheran. It will be Biola's first matchup with CLU since 2008. California Lutheran controls the all-time series, 4-0.
