Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penner's Brace Carries BU

Biola beats Concordia 3-1 to pick up first PacWest win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Soccer evened its PacWest Conference record on Wednesday night as it cruised to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Concordia Irvine Eagles behind a pair of goals from Katelyn Penner.

Jess Hase opened the scoring in the game by heading home a goal right off the far post on a corner kick opportunity. It's her first collegiate goal and was the first goal of the season for Biola, after failing to put one in the back of the net at Point Loma last week.

Hase's goal came as part of a stellar first half for Head Coach Erin Brunelle's side. Biola controlled possession throughout the first half and shut down any looks from the visitors with some good, physical play in the defensive end.

The Eagles doubled the lead in the 36th minute when Katelyn Penner scored her first of the season on a laser beam from 23 or 24 yards out. Following that second goal Biola held Concordia to just a single shot over the final 10 minutes of the half.

With a 2-0 lead in tow, Biola Women's Soccer did not simply settle in and play the ball back. The Eagles continued to press up top and look for opportunities, and this allowed Concordia a few opportunities of their own.

The visitors managed 10 shots in the second half, making new keeper Briana Ruelas put in some work to keep Biola out in front. Ruelas came up with three saves out of the four shots-on-goal for CUI in the second half. The only one that beat her was a banger from nearly 25 yards out, very similar to Penner's first-half score.

Thankfully for Biola, not more than 10 seconds prior to that goal from Concordia Irvine Penner managed to find twine for a second time to put Biola ahead 3-0 with less than four minutes on the clock.

It was another long strike from the Eagles' midfielder, coming as she charged into the penalty area to pick up a loose ball and took a one-time strike at it to cash in. She and the Eagles benefited from the ball deflecting off a CUI defender and bending just out of the reach of the Concordia keeper.

Penner's two scores came out of four shot attempts as she led the team in that category for the first time this season. Her four shots tonight is one more than Biola's team total in last week's meeting at Point Loma.

After that late flurry of action in the 86th-minute the frustration began to show on the Concordia Irvine side as two of their top players picked up cautions and they managed no more shots in the contest. The score settled in to it's final scoreline of 3-1 and brought Biola even on the year in goals scored vs. goals allowed.

The win pushes Biola to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in Pacwest Conference play. Concordia Irvine dropped to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in conference. Biola hosts Westmont next week on Wednesday night before returning to PacWest play the following week.
