Eagles Drop Contest to Concordia

A second half surge from CUI propelled the host squad past Biola on Thursday.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Originally scheduled for a Wednesday contest, Biola (1-2, 1-2) and Concordia University Irvine (1-2, 1-2) met on Thursday afternoon. A close-knit battle evolved into a runaway victory for the home team, as CUI scored three goals in the final eight minutes for the 4-0 shutout.

The opening half was a defensive struggle between the two squads, as the teams posted nine shots and zero goals combined. Anna Boyer offered a stout performance in goal for BU, notching 45 scoreless minutes through the first half with four total saves.

Biola forward Mason Stansberry was on the attack early in the match, launching a shot on goal in the 14th minute but could not find the back of the net.

After the halftime break, a Biola foul inside the box gave Concordia a penalty kick in the 47th minute. Jadenn Carrillo launched it through to break the 0-0 tie with the first goal of the contest.

Throughout the second half, CUI recorded 14 shots and seven corner kicks. Briana Ruelas nabbed four saves, including a diving stop from a Concordia free kick.

The CUI offensive onslaught came in the final stretch, as the squad netted three goals in the last eight minutes of the match for the 4-0 final score.

The Biola women's soccer team will look to bounce back in their next match on Wednesday night on the road against Azusa Pacific.
