Cornerstone Cup Round One

Biola basketball is set for important matchups at Azusa Pacific on Saturday.

December 09, 2021

AZUSA, Calif. --- Four undefeated teams in conference play will take the floor on Saturday inside the Felix Event Center. The men's and women's basketball teams for both Azusa Pacific and Biola enter the weekend, 2-0 in the PacWest, but will battle it out for conference superiority on Saturday.

The opening contest of the weekend features an Azusa Pacific women's squad that is ranked fourth in the west region and a Biola women's team that is sitting in 10th in the region. Both teams are coming off of wins against Fresno Pacific and Holy Names, as APU boasts a 6-1 record and the Eagles tout a 6-2 overall mark.

Biola will enter Saturday on a three-game winning streak, while looking for its first win against APU since 2016. The reigning PacWest Player of the Week, Amiah Simmons, will play a crucial role for the Eagles. The freshman posted her fifth-straight 20-point effort against Holy Names and is currently maintaining an average of 19.4 points per game to rank 29th in the nation.

On the men's side, BU climbed into the fourth spot inside the west region rankings, while picking up votes in the national poll, as well. Azusa Pacific has picked up the pace of late, winning their last four to receive votes in the latest regional poll. Biola has won five-straight heading into the weekend, logging an 8-1 overall record.

A veteran cast has been dominant for the Eagles in the 2021-22 campaign. Fifth-year star Michael Bagatourian soared last Thursday, posting a career-best mark of 36 points in a single game. As a team, Biola is relentless on the boards, rating second in the NCAA DII in rebounding margin.

A pair of afternoon contests will start at 2:15 pm at Azusa Pacific with the women's competition. The men's bout will follow with tip-off set for 4:30 pm.
