Slow Start Trips Up BU

The Eagles fell behind early in the Cornerstone Cup on Saturday and could not find a way back, falling 68-55.

AZUSA, Calif. --- A Saturday afternoon contest at the Felix Event Center featured a top-tier matchup between the Biola Eagles (8-2, 2-1 PacWest) and the Azusa Pacific Cougars (5-4, 3-0 PacWest). An early shooting outburst from APU carried the host squad to a 68-55 win over BU.

The early going was defined by the hot shooting of the hosting Cougars. The first seven makes for APU came from behind the three-point line, opening up a 21-4 lead. A 15-0 run favored APU but a jumper from Chris Rossow stopped the bleeding.

BU buckled down and cut its deficit to eight points with just under seven minutes left in the half. The Eagles held APU scoreless for four minutes of action, forcing the opposition to go 0-8 from the floor in the stretch. Rossow posted five of the team's nine points in the rally with a layup and a triple.

The Cougars returned to form to finish off the half. The host squad rebuilt its double-digit lead, finishing off the first half with 10 three-pointers on 47.9 percent shooting from long range for a 40-25 advantage.

After the halftime hiatus, Biola came out strong with defense that turned into offense. In the opening possession of the second half, Rossow picked the pocket of a Cougar and converted on an easy fastbreak layup. The BU defense was stout to start, holding APU scoreless for nearly the first three minutes of the second half.

The remainder of the second half was an even battle. The APU lead never exceeded 16 points but also never crept below 10. Biola could not find the final push, resulting in a 68-55 final.

Rossow led the offense on Saturday, totaling a season-high 21 points on 50.0 percent shooting from the field. The point guard also added seven rebounds and three steals but was hampered by five turnovers. Michael Bagatourian and Alex Wright also crossed the 10-point threshold, as the trio of scorers accounted for 87.2 percent of the team's points on the night.

Maximo Milovich provided a spark off the bench, leading the team with eight rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

Biola will be back in action at home against Dominican next Saturday at 7:30 pm.
