Battle It Out

The BU women’s basketball squad wrapped up its preseason on Tuesday night, taking on NCAA DI Long Beach State.

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- In their third-straight road match against a NCAA Division I opponent, the Eagles battled it out with Long Beach State. The two teams fought evenly through three periods but a big second quarter helped the Beach take the win, 80-61, in the exhibition contest.

Biola's preseason slate finished off with its exhibition competition on Tuesday. The Eagles showed their improvement with a solid performance against a tough opponent.

Through the opening quarter, BU kept The Beach at bay never letting them build a lead any larger than six points. Jordan Rabe led the visiting Eagles in the stanza, posting six points and three rebounds, on the way to a 18-16 LBSU lead through 10 minutes of action.

Amiah Simmons tied the game at 19 with an and-one 30 seconds into the second quarter. Through the next five minutes, the two teams maintained pace, leading to a 28-25 edge for the host squad.

The final four minutes of the half brought the separation in the contest, as Long Beach State went on a 14-2 run. The swing created a 15-point advantage for the Beach, heading into the break.

Despite the tough stretch, BU returned to form to keep the deficit from ballooning more. Simmons took over offensively to help the BU offense collect 16 points in the third quarter. The 5-9 guard went five-for-five from the charity stripe and two-for-four from the field to add nine points. The freshman surpassed double-digits in the scoring column for the third-straight game, recording 17 points on the night.

BU and LBSU were separated by just two points in the third and fourth quarters, individually. In the final quarter, three Eagles tallied at least five points to combine for all 18 points for BU.

In addition to Simmons, two more Eagles logged at least 10 points on Tuesday, including Rabe (16) and Stephanie Lee (12). Rabe was extremely efficient, converting at a 72.7 percent clip for 16 points. The forward matched a team-high six boards, as well.

"We showed we could compete. Playing with these tough DI schools is only helping us get better," said Rabe. "I thought overall we made improvements and I'm so excited to get our official season started."

The BU squad's official season is set to begin with the CCAA-PacWest Challenge on Friday, as the Eagles take on CSU Los Angeles at 2:00 pm.
