Season-Opening Success

The Eagles took control late in the contest to take an 81-74 overtime win over Cal State LA.

LOS ANGELES --- A fourth quarter deficit could not deny the Biola women's basketball team on Friday afternoon. The Eagles made a last minute push to force overtime and used their momentum to pick up the victory with an 81-74 final score.

Biola opened its 2021-22 regular season slate on Friday in the CCAA-PacWest Challenge. Cal State LA played host for the weekend bouts, as the two teams battled it out. The win for BU marked the first season-opening triumph in a full season for the program since 2012.

The magic began with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. The visiting Eagles faced an eight-point hole with 1:32 left in the fourth quarter. Amiah Simmons sparked an 8-0 rally to force overtime, knocking down a three-pointer. Aysia Johnson followed up with a steal and fastbreak push that resulted in a pair of free throws.

"I felt the exhibition games against DI schools really helped us prepare for the season and now we are hungry," said Johnson.

That hunger showed on defense, as BU held the Golden Eagles scoreless for 5:41 of gametime between the fourth quarter and overtime. Within that stretch, Biola outscored the host squad 13-0, while forcing six turnovers.

A Jordan Rabe bucket gave Biola the early lead in the overtime period, before an and-one from Simmons made it a two-score game. BU went on to hit five free throws to secure the 81-74 triumph.

Rabe and Simmons each compiled double-doubles in the season-opener on Friday. Rabe notched 22 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. In her collegiate debut in a countable contest, Simmons found ways to impact the game. The freshman guard tallied 15 points with six field goals, while nabbing 11 boards.

A third Eagle grabbed double-digit rebounds on Friday, Johnson. The senior guard turned it up after the halftime break, logging all 10 boards in the second half.

BU's leading scorer was Stephanie Lee, who went 8-11 from the field for 23 points. Long range shooting came in handy for Lee, as she sank five treys at a 62.5 percent clip.

The short-handed Eagles did not see too many minutes from the reserves in the win. The only player off the bench with more than 10 minutes played was Laila Walker. The guard orchestrated the offense while on the floor, dishing out a team-high six assists.

Biola will complete the CCAA-PacWest Challenge on Saturday, battling CSU Dominguez Hills at 2:00 pm.
