BU Boots Blank Hawks

The Eagles scored a 1-0 victory on Thursday, edging Holy Names at Al Barbour Field.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (6-8-1, 4-4-0 PW) continued its strong play at home, earning the 1-0 shutout against the visiting Holy Names Hawks (0-16-0, 0-8-0 PW). Thursday night's contest improved the team's record at Al Barbour Field to 4-2-1 this season.

Briana Ruelas notched the victory in goal for BU, maintaining a necessary clean sheet. The shutout was the first for the keeper, who tallied two saves on the day.

Back-and-forth play through the opening 15 minutes of action subsided, as the Eagles began to take over. Biola took control of the ball, creating opportunities inside the attacking third. Two close calls came in the middle of the half with Jazmin Montalvo nearly scoring a breakaway goal and Sarah Freed missing a good look in the box just above the crossbar.

BU opened up its lead in the 35th minute with Montalvo getting loose on the attack. Abby Chavez set up the play with a through ball that froze the defender, allowing Montalvo to sprint by. With just the goalie to beat, Montalvo juked the keeper to the left and sent in the wide open goal.

Chloe Laurin stepped up on the back end to ensure Biola's halftime lead. Three minutes prior to Montalvo's score, the Hawks looked to take advantage of an empty Eagles net. Luckily, the freshman defender was in the perfect spot to clear the incoming shot and keep the match scoreless.

The BU offense kept the pressure on after the halftime break, logging eight shots to help build their match total of 17. Penner took a chance with a well-struck ball at the top of the box but was stopped by the HNU keeper. Montalvo and Jess Hase found opportunities near the net as well, adding to the team's 10 shots on-goal.

Ruelas was excellent in snuffing out the HNU frantic comeback efforts. Back to back big plays came in from the BU keeper in the 79th minute. Ruelas pushed away a shot from a long free kick, before clearing a dangerous corner kick to maintain the BU advantage.

Biola went on to win 1-0, possessing the ball for 64 percent of the match and tallying 17 shots for its second-highest shot count this year.

The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday with another home match against Dominican at 2:30 pm.
