Ruiz Headlines PacWest Postseason Honors

Lynette Ruiz was named PacWest Freshman of the Year, while 12 Eagles made an All-PacWest team.

November 04, 2021

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Women's Cross Country PacWest Freshman of the Year was none other than Biola's Lynette Ruiz. The PacWest also announced its full list of award-winners this week, including the All-PacWest teams determined at the PacWest Championships.

True freshman Ruiz was dominant for the Eagles since her collegiate debut in September. Three top-10 placements culminated in a second place finish at the PacWest Championship. Ruiz helped Biola to second place in the conference race, recording a time of 22:19.2.

Head Coach Sean Henning had high praise for his star athlete, "Lynette has done a great job this season. She has been such a consistent presence for us; she is running like a savvy veteran in some big races. I'm very proud of her progress so far this year, and I'm excited to see her run against some great competition at regionals.

Also announced were the three All-PacWest teams for both men and women's cross country. These were decided and announced on race day at the PacWest Championships, with Biola runners accounting for 12 of the league's 42 all-conference awards.

Seven runners scored the postseason honor on the women's side to pace the conference. "I'm very happy for our ladies, putting seven runners in the top 16 is no small feat. That hasn't been done since Cal Baptist was in this conference; it is very difficult to do. They ran well and I'm very proud of them!"

Five men for the Eagles finished amongst the top 21 for the award, including Ronald Kigen who was the lone first team honor for BU. "The men did a great job battling for every place and securing five all-conference awards. This is also very hard to do, they did a great job of representing our team, despite a tough day for the team as a whole."

Both teams are back in action this Saturday at the NCAA Division II West Region Championships. The women's 6k race will begin at 10:00 am and the men's 10k will begin at 11:15 am at the Ash Creek Preserve in Monmouth, Oregon.
