Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

BU Passes Century Mark in Win

The Eagles cruised to their sixth win this season in a 105-59 rout over West Coast Baptist.

LA MIRADA --- Biola Men's Basketball had a noticeable size advantage on Saturday as West Coast Baptist came to visit and Dr. Dave Holmquist's side did not shy away from leaning into that advantage. Biola hit the century mark for the first time since Feb. 22, 2020 in a 105-59 drubbing of the visiting Eagles.

Biola ended the night with 66 of its 105 points being scored from inside the painted area. Half of those scores came as second-chance buckets with BU also posting a serious rebounding advantage over WCBC (72-29).

"Playing the ball inside was a point of emphasis. I think it's that way with any zone we come across over the course of the year," said Jesse Elrod. "We want to get it inside because we know we have great size inside and great passes coming in."

The 72 rebounds is just two shy of the all-time program record of 74 (set back in 1969). It smashes the previous NCAA Division II era record of 55, which came also against West Coast Baptist back in 2018.

Jesse Elrod led the rebounding effort with 11 boards. He paired that with a team-best 20 points for his first double-double of the new year. All of that offense came in just 18 minutes as Holmquist was really able to spread the wealth with the lead never in doubt.  Biola had 11 players with 11 or more minutes played and Jack Cheng saw his first five minutes of the year.

Biola led 49-29 at the half, which was closer than it was for most of the first stanza. The visiting team, which fired up three after three all night long, ended the first half on a 9-0 run with two of the team's 11 made threes. One of those was a buzzer-beater from near half-court from Job Sichting. Forty-four of West Coast Baptist's 72 shots came from beyond the three-point arc. However, they made just 25 percent of those.

Biola shot a little better from deep, 31 percent, but would've won the game by an even wider margin had they shot closer to their season percentage from distance (36 percent). Biola outscored WCBC 56-30 in the second-half to bring the game final at 105-59.

The 56 points scored in the second half is just four off the NCAA Division II era record of 60 points in a half, which came against conference opponent Holy Names in that Feb. 22, 2020 game.

"Rhythm going into conference play is great because you have good wins under your belt going forward," said Elrod. "There's good rhythm going in the offense, and the defense is solid. We're peaking at the right time."

Michael Bagatourian was the team's only other double-digit scorer with 19. He and Elrod were the most economical for BU as Bagatourian made eight of his 13 field goal efforts and Elrod was a season-best 9-for-11.

Outside of that, the team had nine other scorers in the affair. Chris Rossow paired nine points with seven assists and five rebounds in another all-around night. His no. 2 Omari Maulana had another impressive showing with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Biola will have some work to do in practice in the coming week as they did turn the ball over 13 times, making it seven games with 10+ turnovers this season.

The win helps Biola improve to 6-1 ahead of its PacWest Conference opener on Thursday at home against Fresno Pacific (6-0). The men's game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
