Biola Holds Off Toros

Two games in two days resulted in a 2-0 start for the Biola 2021-22 campaign.

LOS ANGELES --- The Eagles capped off the CCAA-PacWest Challenge on Saturday afternoon. BU improved to 2-0 on the season, taking down CSU Dominguez Hills on a neutral court.

Neither team took control through the opening period, as the largest lead for either team was just six points.

The pace began to quicken in the second stanza with the two teams combining for 45 points. The BU offense led the way in the big quarter, logging 28 points and creating an 11-point swing in their favor. Biola was excellent from the field as a group, knocking down 11 field goals at a 55.0 percent rate.

Defense defined the third quarter, as neither team tallied more than eight points. Through the 10 minutes of action, there were two scoreless stretches lasting three minutes each. The Toros boasted a slightly better field goal percentage at 23.08 compared to 18.75 for the Eagles.

The game opened up for the Eagles following a four-point play from Stephanie Lee, which gave Biola a 56-44 advantage with 8:41 left in the contest. Jordan Rabe got the play started on the defensive end with a block, before Aysia Johnson set up the shot for the assist.

The double-digit lead would hold for BU until the two and half minute mark in the fourth quarter. The Toros would not go quietly, mounting a comeback in the waning moments in the contest. A 14-4 run brought the Toros within one point with 13 seconds on the clock. Two clutch free throws from Amiah Simmons gave BU the 72-69 lead that would hold through the final buzzer.

Simmons was productive on the offensive end, collecting a team-high 20 points. The freshman also added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in the winning effort. The young talent was happy with the team's performance on Saturday, "I'm proud of our team and excited for our season. I feel like we can get even better from here."

The team as a whole did well at distributing the ball with six Eagles offering multiple assists. Johnson led the way with four, while also notching eight points.

Rabe tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games. Lee also reached double-digits on Friday. The team captain knocked down six shots and three long balls to record 19 points.

BU will be back on the court on Wednesday, competing on the road against Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 pm.
