What a Battle

Biola and Cal Poly Pomona traded blows on Wednesday night but the Broncos came out on top, 81-76.

POMONA, Calif. --- A tough contest between two strong teams came down to a five-point differential on Wednesday. The home team pulled out the win, as Cal Poly Pomona (1-2) survived a late push by the Biola Eagles (2-1).

One bad quarter sunk Biola, as the Broncos utilized a 20-5 third quarter to turn a seven-point BU lead into an eight-point BU deficit. Offensive woes plagued the visitors, who went 1-16 shooting from the field and 0-8 from downtown.

Without the drought, Biola's totals through the first, second and fourth quarters look incredible. Through those 30 minutes, BU boasted a 57.9 three-point field goal percentage, a 61.9 field goal percentage and a plus-10 scoring margin.

The second stanza belonged to the Eagles, who shared the basketball well to help them outscore CPP, 23-7. In the first six minutes of the quarter, six different Eagles scored the first six shots. Defensively, BU forced six CPP turnovers and held the host squad to 3-11 shooting from the planks.

On the night, Stephanie Lee was the primary scorer, posting 18 points and four deep balls. Jordan Rabe and Amiah Simmons also reached double-digit totals with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

After their strong third quarter, the Broncos looked to close out the victory with a smooth fourth period. It started that way, as Cal Poly Pomona opened up a 12-point lead with five minutes on the clock.

The Eagles would not go down that easy. BU surged back with a 13-4 run, limiting the damage to a three-point deficit with 1:49 left in the contest. Madi Chang led the charge with back-to-back three-pointers at the start of the rally. CPP responded quickly and would not allow it to become a one-score game again until there were five seconds remaining in the contest. Two final free throws made the difference five points, once again, for an 81-76 final.

Autumn Hopson saw her first action in 2021 regular season play on Wednesday. The guard was stout on defense, nabbing a team-high three steals.

Biola will be back in action on Saturday in its home opener against CSU San Bernardino at 5:30 pm.
