Here Come the Eagles

Biola downs No. 24 Chaminade in a five-set match, 3-2.

HONOLULU, Hi. --- Biola Volleyball couldn't have asked for a better ending to its Hawaii road trip as the Eagles downed No. 24 Chaminade in a five-set battle at McCabe Gymnasium on Saturday evening (25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 21-25, 15-12).

The Eagles went 2-1 on the road trip, falling to Hawaii Hilo (9-2, 6-1) who sits just one game back of Azusa Pacific (12-4, 7-1) in the PacWest standings. Biola (9-6, 5-2) picked up a big conference win as the Eagles took the five-set match from Chaminade (16-4, 6-2) on Saturday, the Silverswords currently sit in third place in the PacWest.

"This was so good for our girls, they played so well tonight," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "We were able to take advantage of a team who was missing a key player in the front row."

Biola started off strong, taking the first two sets with identical scores of 25-20 but allowed Chaminade to get right back into the match as the Silverswords took the next two sets to force a fifth set.

When it mattered most, Biola was able to overcome four missed serves in the deciding set to walk away with the set and match victory.

A trio of Eagles recorded double-digit kills as Raegan Tjepkema lead the charge with 14 kills, tying her season-high. Dani Bryant and Madison Beebe each collected 11 kills as well.

Bryant continued to have an excellent road trip as the middle blocker recorded a .429 hitting percentage against Chaminade, totaling 54 total kills in three matches.

"Dani really stepped it up and had a big night," commented Seltzer. "She keeps getting better and better offensively and had a big road trip."

Defensively, Biola had four players notch double-digit digs; Vanessa Garcia and Abby Brewster each logged 15, Sami Hover added 14 and Beebe recorded 12. Dominique Kirton just missed the dig party as the redshirt freshman recorded nine digs.

Vanessa Garcia had what Seltzer considered "maybe the best match of her career." Garcia recorded 38 assists, but what impressed Seltzer most was her decision-making. "There isn't a stat for making good decisions on the court and finding the right people," said Seltzer. "She killed it!"

While the results on the court reflected a team who worked together, Seltzer was sure to credit the team off the court, giving high praise to his assistant coaches Gracee Teague and Brian Failinger. "They were fantastic and aided in the decision-making process throughout the match," commented Seltzer, "They both have very good attention to detail and I'm glad I can rely on them."

Biola is back in action as they take on Concordia (9-4, 4-2) at CU Area on October 16 at 5 p.m.
