Home Sweet Home

Five-straight home matches have resulted in five-straight wins for the Eagles, who defeated Hawaii Hilo on Friday.

LA MIRADA --- Returning to La Mirada was magical for the Biola volleyball squad. The team extended its winning streak to five on Friday night, taking down an impressive Hawaii Hilo squad (13-4, 10-3 PW). All five wins in the positive stretch have come inside Chase Gymnasium, as BU (14-7, 10-3 PW) continued to excel amidst an eight-match homestand.

"We are in a really tough region but to go 5-1 against the Hawaii teams is a great accomplishment," said head coach Aaron Seltzer.

Madison Beebe provided the firepower on Friday, helping the Eagles avenge their loss to the Vulcans earlier this season. The outside hitter recorded 17 kills on the night, setting a team season-high and a program-best mark in the NCAA Division II era for a three-set match.

The bulk of Beebe's work came in the first two sets. The Mission Viejo, California native posted eight kills in the opening set, before adding seven more in set number two. The offensive juggernaut pushed the Eagles to a huge lead in the first set, as the host squad won 25-12.

UHH found its largest lead of the match in the second set. Three times during the game, Hawaii Hilo notched a three-point advantage, as the visitors looked to tie the match at one set apiece.

Biola responded with small runs to cut down on the deficit and regain the lead. The crucial stretch was a three-point swing to give Biola a 22-19 lead, following a pair of errors from UHH and a kill from Beebe. Per usual, Beebe put an exclamation point on the set, logging the kill to give BU 25 points and the set victory.

BU took that momentum and took off for a 7-1 lead to start the third set. Reagan Tjepkema served through a 6-0 run for BU to give the Eagles the commanding lead. The middle blocker paced the team with three aces on Friday. "Hats off to our servers," said Seltzer. "They did a great job hitting their spots and keeping the match manageable."

The large lead would not be relinquished, as the Eagles cruised in set number three for the 25-12, 25-21, 25-17 three-set victory.

Vanessa Garcia was once again an exceptional distributor, handing out 34 assists. Dani Bryant was a beneficiary of Garcia's great passing, landing nine kills and a .350 hitting percentage.

"Tonight was a great team effort," added Seltzer. "The middles did a good job managing the Hawaii Hilo attack and Mary McDonnell and Emily Smith came in and played great for us."

Biola will continue its home stretch next Thursday with a doubleheader against Dominican beginning at 5:00 pm.
