Eagles Ice the Penguins

Biola cruises past the Dominican side to hand Aaron Seltzer win 500.

LA MIRADA, CALIF.  --- Biola Volleyball continued to look dominant in taking down Dominican in a three-set win to continue their perfect homestand and six-match winning streak inside Chase Gymnasium.

As a squad, the Eagles collected a total of 39 kills while hitting .245 with 12 aces, 50 digs and six blocks. With the victory in this opening match, Head Coach Aaron Seltzer won his 500th game coaching the Eagles. He's in his 20th season at Biola, starting in 2002.

BU and DUC both came ready to work in the first set keeping the game very close. The Penguins took a two-point lead 5-3 with their energy coming in hot.

Biola came back to tie up the game 12-12 and eventually would win five rallies in a row taking the score to 17-12 with help from back-to-back Dominique Kirton kills. The Eagles worked together to finish off the set win 25-17 fueled by Abigail Copeland

The trio of Copeland, Dani Bryant, and Allie Tillery all had a great night at the net for the Eagles with three blocks each. Biola was also executing well behind the service line, tying their season-high with the 12 service aces. Sami Hover (4) and Dominique Kirton (3) combined for over half of those.

After an intense offensive fight on both sides of the net, the second set became a defensive battle as both teams struggled to find open hitting lanes. Biola came out with the first point and Dominican tailed right behind them.

The second set started very much just as the first holding the Penguins at an arm's length for much of the set with the lead hovering around a few points. Cliff hanging toward the end of the set, Biola dug deep and did what they needed to do by taking control of the net, finishing that set 25-22 ending with a great block by Copeland and Tillery. The Eagles won five of the final six rallies to ensure they'd take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set number three saw Biola riding the home momentum from the previous sets, jumping out to a massive 16-8 lead after capitalizing on multiple errors made by Dominican.

The offensive control of Marissa Price played a huge role in this lead, setting the tone for  the team of 18 assists for the Eagles. Right behind her with 17 assists was Abby Brewster as the Eagles changed up the offense with Vanessa Garcia taking a rest. After Dominican made the 16-8 set into a 16-9 game, Biola would only allow the Penguins to score three more points to finish the game 25-12. This included an eight-rally streak behind the serve of Kirton.

Since the Eagles had the opportunity to play in a rare doubleheader, Seltzer was able to give Vanessa Garcia, Raegan Tjepkema and Madison Beebe rest to allow their fellow teammates to step in and have a killer game. Redshirt sophomore Emily Smith had seven digs for BU and redshirt freshman Brie Nishimura stepped up with stellar serves to help the Eagles win rally after rally.

This match helped Biola improve to 15-7 (11-3 PacWest). Dominican dropped its ninth match in a row to fall to 1-22 (1-13 PacWest). The Eagles followed up win 500 with an immediate chance at 501.
