LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball bounced back from a tough 3-0 loss against Concordia Irvine on Saturday night by earning a 3-0 (25-19, 25, 25-19) sweep versus Academy of Art University on Thursday evening at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles welcomed back their home fans with full capacity allowed indoors for the first time since the 2019 season.
Biola asserted its dominance right from the start as the Eagles got on the board quickly with a 25-19 success in the opening set. Consistency was key in the return to Chase Gym as the Eagles finished all three sets holding their opponents to 19 points.
One long run made the difference in every set as Biola turned close games into relatively stress-free victories. The Eagles won five of the first six points in the first to establish some early momentum. The second game was 12-12 before a 6-1 run broke the game in Biola's favor. Finally, the deciding set went from 12-11 to 20-14 following a nice 8-3 Eagles streak.
Three Eagles tallied seven or more kills on the night while Biola posted a .429 hitting percentage, which is the Eagles' highest percentage in a match since they hit .434 against Point Loma back in 2018. Biola limited itself to just nine total attack errors. It's the first time since 2019 the team's been in single digits for a match.
Madison Beebe led the convocation with 14 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, followed by Raegan Tjepkema with 10 kills. Abigail Copeland recorded seven kills for the night to go with four blocks. She was in on half of the stuffs from BU, which dominated play at the net with an 8-3 blocking advantage.
The solid attack helped Biola in another critical category - sideouts. The Eagles worked their way to a sideout at greater than 75 percent efficiency in both the first and third sets.
Sami Hover led the team with three service aces and added nine digs to her night, helping the Eagles to a total of seven service aces and only allowing the Urban Knights to a total of two the whole match.
Hover got out to a hot start with seven digs in the first game, before Abby Brewster and Emily Smith began to be the attack targets more often than not later in the match. The pair dealt well with seven total digs between them.
Vanessa Garcia was 10 shy away from hitting a season-high logging 37 assists for the Eagles.
Even though there were great rallies going on between both teams, Biola was top of their game both defensively and offensively, capitalizing every chance they got. The box score tells it all, Biola controlled the game as the Eagles surpassed their opponent in aces (7-2), kills (45-35), assists (43-33), and digs (30-23).
The Eagles improved to 10-7 (6-3 PacWest), while the Urban Knights dropped to 5-1 (2-8 PacWest).
The Eagles are back in action on October 22 as they host Fresno Pacific (5-15, 2-8 PacWest) at 6 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium. For live stats links and updates check
