Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Benn Notches Double-Double In Tough Loss

Jazz Benn has Biola's first double-double of 2021, but cold shooting leads to loss at APU.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Through the first quarter of play out in Azusa it seemed like Biola Women's Basketball was primed for another thrilling back-and-forth affair with its biggest rival, just like we saw one day earlier.

However, the Biola offense went cold as ice for long stretches in each of the final three quarters and could not overcome a strong performance by APU's strong center in a 66-49 loss to the Cougars.

The first quarter was competitive, with both teams trading buckets en route to a 15-14 APU lead at the break. However, the Cougars held Biola to just 20 total points over the next two quarters in order to take a hold of the game headed into the final frame. Biola was outscored 17-12 in the second and 20-8 in the third to go into the last quarter looking at a seemingly insurmountable 52-34 deficit.

APU grew the lead to as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter, leading 62-37 with 3:57 to play, but Biola ended the game on a 12-4 run to cut things back down to the 17-point gap at the final buzzer.

Biola went 4-for-6 from the floor during those final three minutes and change, which was a big improvement from the 15-for-60 the team was over the rest of the contest. The 28 percent shooting was Biola's lowest tally of this young season, and it included a 23 percent mark from beyond the arc (7-for-30) in the Eagles' second-consecutive game with 30+ three-point attempts.

The Eagles did see some good things as Jazz Benn notched the first double-double of the season for BU. She had 12 points and 10 rebounds, but she did struggle at times, turning the ball over a team-high seven times in this one.

Biola had its season-low for turnovers (14) and had plenty of good looks at the basket throughout the game, but the ball just was not bouncing in the Eagles' favor, causing the team to fall to 0-2 in PacWest Conference play.

Benn was the only double-digit scorer for Biola as the team saw nine different players register points in this one.

It was a very fast and fluid game, with the two teams combining for just eight total free throw attempts. Biola went 4-for-5 at the line and APU was 3-for-3. The Cougars' had fewer attempts and fewer possessions than Biola, but they made the most of things by shooting 48 percent from the field and 40 percent beyond the arc.

Biola will shake this one off as they head into a new week of Southern California pod play within the PacWest Conference. The Eagles (1-2, 0-2 PacWest) will play at Point Loma (2-1, 1-1 PacWest) on Friday and then host the Sea Lions on Saturday of next week.
