Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lopsided Quarters Settle It

Biola dominates the third, but PLNU dominates the fourth to give Sea Lions the edge.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- While the first 20 minutes of Friday's meeting between Point Loma and Biola Women's Basketball was a back-and-forth one-point affair, the final 20 minutes was anything but as the two sides traded explosive quarters in the third and fourth.

Biola outscored the Sea Lions 23-13 in the third quarter to enter into the fourth with a healthy nine-point (55-46) buffer and hopes of earning their first PacWest Conference win of this 2021 season. However, it was the Sea Lions that proved the more composed side in the fourth, out-scoring the Eagles 26-9 in the final frame to earn the heartbreaking 72-64 victory.

All eyes were and should be on Jordan Rabe on this day. The sophomore forward had a career day by all measures to bring sunshine to the losing effort. She was 7-for-10 from the floor for 16 points to go along with eight rebounds and a block in a fantastic showing. She came into this one with five points and 10 rebounds in the Eagles' first three games of the season. In fact, her 10 field goal attempts in this one was four more than her season total (6) coming into the day.

Rabe's efficiency from the field (70 percent) was 27 points higher than the team average as Biola went 22-for-51 from the floor in this one to set a season-best field goal percentage (.431).

The Eagles were even better in that standout third quarter, shooting 55 percent (6-for-11) while making two of their three three-point attempts. That was a big improvement from the first half, where BU was just 2-for-7 and 2-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Stephanie Lee was the go-to spot for three-point success in this one. The sophomore made a season-high five triples as part of a 19-point, 5-rebound performance.

The trouble for Biola in the fourth quarter was a compounding of issues - the first being the shooting went real cold, real fast. The Eagles hit just three of 12 shots from the field in the final 10 minutes, including making just two of nine attempts in the first seven minutes as PLNU stole back the lead.

Conversely, the Sea Lions had their best effort in the final 10 ticks off the clock, making 50 percent of their shots and nearly doubling the amount of made three-pointers from their first 30 minutes. The dagger was a 16-0 run between 6:26 and 0:17 that helped PLNU go from six points down to 10 points up.

Rabe made a layup as time expired to bump up her scoring a bit, but ultimately that deficit was way too difficult to come back from, especially with Biola committing five turnovers in the last quarter.

The Eagles had 19 turnovers in the game with four of those coming on offensive fouls (all in the second half). Point Loma cashed in on almost all of those opportunities, scoring 18 points off the turnovers.

Rabe and Lee were joined by Jazz Benn who also notched double-figures in the points column (12). Seven of those 12 came in the first quarter as the senior helped the Eagles get off to a hot start.

PLNU controlled the boards with a 44-40 advantage in rebounding, but the more important bit of that is the 17 offensive rebounds collected by the Sea Lions, helping the hosts to an additional 16 second-chance points.

The loss is the first in the last three tries as Biola had won two in a row against the Sea Lions. It was not since December 2019 that PLNU last had a win over BU. Biola will take an all-time mark of 47-41 against the Sea Lions into tomorrow's recap between these two sides.

The Eagles (1-3, 0-3 PacWest) host Point Loma (3-1, 2-1 PacWest) at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be live streamed for free on the Biola Athletics YouTube Channel. There will be no Saturday men's game due to PacWest Conference COVID-19 protocols.
