ART U Strikes Back

Academy of Art returns the favor by defeating Biola Women’s Basketball with tons of made free throws.

SAN FRANCISCO --- The Academy of Art Urban Knights used spurts of good shooting and a high volume of free throws to defeat Biola Women's Basketball on Saturday. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team drew within as few as four points in the third quarter and benefited from another good scoring performance from freshman Madi Chang, who scored 11 points in the second half,

But Academy of Art made two key three-pointers near the end of the third quarter and sank 13 free throws in the fourth period to defeat Biola 68-58. The Eagles fall to fourth place in the PacWest with their 11-6 conference record after the loss. But Biola is still a game up on fifth Point Loma and has a four-and-a-half game cushion for qualification into the PacWest tournament field.

While Taylor Bennett and Chanel Stuart combined for 19 of their team's 33 first-half points, Jazz Benn and Stephanie Lee led the way for Biola. Benn scored seven points in the second quarter alone on 3-of-7 shooting while Lee overcame a few misses from beyond the arc to score six on three shots from two-point range.

The Eagles missed the momentum they normally get from good stretches of three-point shooting in this game. As a team, Biola was 4-for-15 from beyond the arc in the first half and 4-for-13 in the second.

Aysia Johnson showed her willingness to get physical and was a big factor in the key and around the arc for the Eagles. Johnson pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds in the game, made two of Biola's eight three-pointers and was one of four women to record a steal. Jelissa Puckett led Biola with three takeaways and matched Benn for a team-best 33 minutes played.

But a great rebounding game is par for the course against Academy of Art for Johnson, who grabbed 13 boards in Biola's first meeting of the year with ART U.

Benn and Lee led the Eagles in scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively. But they were not among the three women who shot 50 percent or better from the field, those players being Chang, Mikayla Greens and Jordan Rabe.

Biola will come back to home to three-straight home games after this brief road trip. The Eagles will host Chaminade in Chase Gym on February 13 at 5:30 p.m.
