Freshman Fuel Strong Start

Freshmen Chang, Lee and Rabe score 17 of Biola's 21 second-quarter points in a 66-61 win over Chaminade.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With the recent scoring outbursts on Madi Chang and Stephanie Lee, Biola Women's Basketball didn't bat an eye at starting the two freshman against Chaminade on Thursday.

The veterans on Head Coach Alan Nakamura's roster sustained the Eagles' resilience as the Silverswords made it a one-possession contest late in the game. But the freshmen trio of Chang, Lee and Jordan Rabe were instrumental in putting the Eagles in a position to play with a lead for the final 20 minutes of the 66-61 win.

The Eagles have now won nine of their last 10 home games and improve to 16-8, 12-6 PacWest. Chaminade drops to 4-20 overall despite Destiny Castro and Breann Nueku both filling it up with 23 and 25 points, respectively.

The Silverswords pulled ahead by a nose in the first quarter as Biola gradually got the offense going and took a 17-15 into the between quarter break after a buzzer-beating three-pointer. The Eagles still had the three-ball working for them in the first quarter, with half of their field goals coming from beyond the arc, and quickly tied the game at 21-21 three minutes into the second with back-to-back threes from Lee.

That start from the Brea, California-native was a precursor of the things to come in the second quarter from Biola's freshmen. The trio of Chang (five points), Lee (eight) and Rabe (four) would score 17 of the Eagles' 21 points in the second quarter while each woman shined in the particular role they played.

Lee got the quarter going with two aforementioned threes. Rabe dropped in two field goals in response to buckets from Chaminade and pulled down two massive offensive boards halfway through the period that maintained the home team's momentum. And Chang buried a last-second three that punctuated a 8-0 run for Biola over the last 1:12 of the half and gave BU a five-point lead at the break.

Tatum Brimley started the run with a three-pointer of her own before adding five more points in the second half to end the night with 12. The senior guard has now reached double figures in four of her last six games and is 60 points away from reaching the 1,000 point club for her career.

Jazz Benn added three in the second half put did the majority of her work getting rebounds around the key to ensure the Eagles got the stops they worked for. Benn pulled down 10 boards, including six in the fourth quarter to help Biola pull out the close win.

Chaminade made it a one-point game with 2:12 left in regulation. But Lee sank five free-throws while Destiny Castro only made one to close out the game and give the Eagles a 66-61 win.

The Eagles will look for their 10th home win of the year on Saturday when they host Hawaii Pacific at 1:30 p.m.
