Eagles Escape Dicey 7th

Biola gets a 7-3 win, but Academy of Art shows late fight in game 3.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After a wet n' wild Southern California Saturday morning pushed start times back seven hours, a game was finally played at Freedom Field Saturday night and it was a fun one!

Biola Softball did battle with the Academy of Art Urban Knights in game three of this week's four-game set and Biola managed to keep its perfect PacWest Conference record intact by hanging seven runs on ART U through the first five innings and then holding on to win 7-3.

The Urban Knights managed to get the game-tying run to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh making Biola sweat a little bit. The pressure was just enough to get Head Coach Nikki Udria to turn from the game's winning pitcher Paula Damas to ace Paige Austin to pick up the save.

That adventurous seventh inning began with a leadoff homerun that just cleared the fence down the left-field line, but was enough to light a spark under the Academt of Art offense.

After that, a walk, three more hits and a few fielder's choice plays equated to two more runs for the Urban Knights before Austin ended the contest with back-to-back swinging strikeouts to get Biola the win.

Biola spotted itself that seven-run lead by putting up a couple of big innings against a handful of ART U pitchers. The Eagles took the lead by squeaking one run across in the first inning on a Kylie Velasco bunt single. The run was nice, but Biola had to be left wanting more after having the bases loaded with nobody out.

The "more" would come just a few innings later the Eagles exploded for four runs in the third inning. A Jennifer Morinishi double started the offensive effort that inning and she was followed up by Kayla Neff's second walk of the day, which added fuel to the fire.

Back-to-back singles from Ari Gonzales and Kylie Velasco brought home the first two runs of the inning and then two more trotted home on a misplayed fielder's choice on a Rilee Ruvalcaba batted ball.

The final two runs came two innings later when Kylie Velasco left the yard for the first homerun of the Eagles' 2020 season. It was an absolute bomb past the fence in right-center field.

The junior second baseman had an incredible ballgame, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI. She, Gonzales (2), Morinishi (2) and Ruth Munoz (2) accounted for all 10 of Biola's hits in the win.

The Eagles reached base in other ways, too, benefitting from two walks, a hit-by-pitch and setting a new season-best with four stolen bases.

The team improves to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in PacWest Conference play following the win. These two teams will go head-to-head one more time at Freedom Field Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
